Surfing Waves Hawaii Activities and Attractions

The Polynesian peoples who first inhabited the islands of Hawaii some time between 300 and 1000 AD developed quite a sophisticated civilization. They had leisure time enough to invent surfing, for example. And this activity became central to their culture, extending from recreation to religion and mythology and even politics. It is said that Hawaiian chiefs could be more or less effective governors depending on their prowess at dancing with Pacific swells.

Maybe this is due in part to the phenomenal year-round tropical climes. Maybe recreation and appreciation of nature are more central to values in the islands. Whatever the reason, lifestyles here on the Hawaiian Islands revolve around the ocean and the outdoors.

Yes, when most people think of Hawaii they automatically imagine someone standing on a surfboard riding along a wave. Though this may well be one of the oldest pastimes in history and Hawaii does provide some of the best surfing on the planet, these days Hawaii offers just about any water sport or outdoor activity you can imagine. No matter what time of year, or where, you are sure to see someone practicing anything from jogging, cycling, rollerblading, tai-chi or yoga to deep sea fishing, snorkeling, windsurfing, kite surfing or water skiing to or even lava sledding.

You can hike into the mountains and explore the native flora and fauna, float on warm breezes parasailing or hang gliding or explore the reefs and colorful marine life scuba diving. When it comes to sun and surf, Hawaii has it all.

Residents and natives of the islands enjoy healthy, active living in one of the most coveted and picturesque places in the world.
